I was still awake last night when the poll results from Ohio came in regarding the proposition on whether or not to preserve the right to have an abortion within their state constitution. I had read about the right wing propaganda leading up to voting day that included outright lies of what the passing of the proposition would mean, including loss of parental rights and abuse of children, as well as being a threat to the very fiber of American family values, blah, blah, blah. They tried to paint supporters of the measure as monsters.
Conservatives also tried to pass a law previously to require a higher percentage to vote in favor of abortion rights protection, rather than a simple majority, as it had always been. I’m relieved to say that the measure did not pass, but the proposition did, so Ohio will add an amendment to their Constitution that will allow women to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy. Perhaps you heard me shout, “YES!” when the results were in.
I’m coming to realize that the extreme right is their own worst enemy. In their determination to strip the personal rights of people, in this case women, they were not content to set reasonable limits or listen to legitimate concerns being raised.
