How It Leads Us to Our Own Truth

I have a Master’s degree in Education as an Instructional Specialist in Reading. There’s a theory in reading, supported by research and peer-reviewed, that states that different people can read the exact same text and come away with different meanings and interpretations (forgive me, I can’t remember whose theory it is or the name; graduate school was a long time ago!). If you think about it, you’ll see the truth in this theory. The first example that comes to mind for me is the Bible and its many interpretations. Same text, multiple interpretations.

Why is that, do you suppose? I think the interpretation of anything by anyone is dependent of many factors, including age, background, upbringing, influences, experiences, environment, race, education, socioeconomic factors, and the list goes on. All of these things affect the way we view and interpret everything.

I had a very loving mother, and I am also a loving mother. I was raised by a father who dropped out of school after the eighth grade to support his family, so when I finished high school, it was a foregone conclusion that I would attend college, since my dad placed such high value on it.
