The Future of Education and Employment

The Archangels Give Us a Glimpse into the Future

When I first started teaching, that’s when this strong push for everyone to get a college education began, and teachers encouraged their students to go to college when they finished public school. I remember a kid who was extremely bright and couldn’t wait to become a mechanic and work with his father at his garage. I suggested that he could go to college and design new cars, rather than repair them, and he thought about it, then dismissed it. I often wonder about that boy, and I hope he stuck with his plan, assuming the job was as appealing as the idea.

By the time I ended my career, after spending nearly forty years in the workforce, most of that time in the field of education, my mindset had completely changed. By then, rather than push a college education, I told students to figure out what they’re good at and what they enjoy, and find a job that offers them the chance to do those things. If it was a job that required a college degree, get a degree, but if it was a job that didn’t require a degree, follow whatever requirements they would need. I told my students that we work so much of our lives, it should be doing something we enjoy.

Unfortunately, most people do not enjoy their jobs. I’ve had jobs that I’d wake up in the morning and dread…
