My understanding is that authors don’t get credit for a read unless the reader goes all the way to the end of recommendations, to the end of the page, well passed the article. Is that correct? What’s the reasoning behind that?

I’ve done well on Medium and love writing here. I’ve never concerned myself with algorithms, distribution, or boosting, because it’s impossible to understand. I just write and share. However, assuming a read is only counted if you scroll to the end of the page, I find that unfair and disrespectful to the authors. It sounds like a way to cheat authors, fine print, a loophole not to pay, etc. can you please clarify?
