I’ve lived in Texas all my life, right in the corner edge of El Paso. Most Texans don’t claim us, because we’re much more diverse living on the US /Mexico border, we’re much less bigoted, and we’re much more liberal than the rest of the state. I was raised to love my state as much as my country, and when I was young and naive, I did. The biggest problem Texas has is the “good ol’ boy” mentality that’s still alive and well today and shapes all politics. A few wealthy white men think they should run the state their way, and they have for generations. They own politics and politicians, and they decide how things will be. I see other states voting for abortion rights, but that will never happen here. Why? It’s not a legal option! Leave it up to the people to decide? Let the laws reflect what the majority want? Absolutely not, in Texas. I see a few signs of changing, but it’s an uphill battle.
