Set the Example for What You Want to See
About a week ago, I responded to an article written by someone who described himself as a Christian. The things he said were insensitive, judgmental, offensive, and glib. He not only attacked individuals by name, but whole groups of people, picking and choosing quotes from the Bible as his ‘proof.’ I never mentioned his name, and my comment to him was respectful, I think, and so was my article. I wrote it from a place of love, not anger, and I never mentioned him by name.
Yesterday, I read an article by a woman who was upset after reading several articles on Easter Sunday that disrespected her, her God, and her religion. The point of her article was that we should all respect each other, that she didn’t judge anyone or any religions; she just wanted to worship in her way in peace. What bothered me most were the angry responses she received from people who in turn bashed Christians and Christianity as much as the writer I discussed last week bashed who he considered to be non-Christians.
Can we all just stop and reconsider for a moment? I no longer practice a traditional religion, but I can see truth and beauty in all world religions, because at the heart of all of them is the belief that we should live our lives in loving kindness toward others, whether they share our beliefs or…
