Having taught at the university level teaching undergrads in the college of education as an adjunct lecturer, I can tell you that there is a huge disconnect between college courses and the reality of public education. Most tenure track professors haven’t spent time in a public school atmosphere for decades if at all. Theory is important, but the difference between theory and practice in public education is often vast. The saddest thing was that teaching classes was at the end of the priority list because of the pressure on professors to publish and be awarded grants. I can’t tell you how many times I got evaluations saying that my classes provided the only practical information they’d received, because I had so many years of experience in public education, and I explained theory as well as practice.
