Do We Need Christian Values?
The Archangels Offer Guidance
Before we get started, let me say up front that this is not an article bashing Christians or Christianity. I’m writing this article in response to a very thought-provoking article from The Atlantic magazine written by Timothy Keller entitled, American Christianity is Due for a Revival.
Keller postulated that the absence of religion leads to individualism rather than community, and it has led to an unprecedented number of people who suffer from depression and anxiety, because they lack validation and confidence in their beliefs. That is an extremely brief summary, and it really does not do justice to the article, as it included some interesting points to ponder, but in the interest of time and writing space, that’s the gist.
Keller goes on to list what the Christian religion, specifically Protestant denominations, need to do to stop the steady decline of their congregations. The point that really caught my attention was when Keller said the Christian religion must embrace both righteousness, meaning retaining traditional beliefs without compromise, and justice, meaning taking an active stance against all forms of oppression.
