Do NOT Do Unto Others …

As You Would Not Have Done to You

You’ve got to love the Golden Rule, right? Most, if not all major religions have similar beliefs, and the world would be such a better place if people used it as a guideline for whatever actions they take. I use it as a compass for my own behavior to the best of my ability, although I freely admit I do find it difficult at times.

I always thought it was pretty self-explanatory, but maybe I’m wrong. With all the vitriol being flung around out there, including but certainly not limited to Medium, I was thinking maybe we should expand on it a little bit and include some examples of the opposite side of the coin, which could be, “Do Not Do Unto as You Would Not Have Done to You.” Maybe this will help to clarify things.

Example #1:

If you don’t want to be targeted for your beliefs, do not target others for their beliefs.

Atheists target religious people and say they’re stupid, while religious people target atheists, condemning them to hell. Neither like what the other has to say, and many use that as an excuse to lash back, but, honestly, what good does it do either side? Do you feel vindicated when you attack others?
