Any time I hear the word vitriol I think of Trump, among others, but the message is true. Trump didn’t convince anyone who was against what he represented to change their minds and side with him, anymore than anti-Trumpers convinced his supporters to leave his side with their vitriol. The point they made was that if you want to change someone’s mind, you don’t do that with anger and hatred. That never works. You get them to listen by using compassion and seeking common ground. Trumps supporters weren’t usually the target of his rants. He used people’s fears and ignorance against them, and they weren’t able to get past that. They weren’t likely to listen to anyone who opposed Trump, but if they had, it wouldn’t have been someone who insulted or yelled at them. That’s what they were saying.
