An Open Letter to Conservatives
People Just Want to Live Their Lives
This is probably a waste of time, because there seem to be far more liberals on Medium than conservatives, but it’s my time to waste, so I’m writing it. I read a comment on an article about the trans community the other day, regarding an article which was both positive and extremely informative. The reader shoved out the common vitriol about abominations and abnormalities, blah, blah, blah, which comes for a dime a dozen, but something he said stood out to me and inspired this article. He said something to the effect that LGBTQ+ people want special treatment. I responded back to him that they don’t want special treatment, they just want equal treatment.
Have you ever listened to Pete Buttiegieg, The Secretary of Transportation for the US, talk about his family? If you didn’t know or hear him reference that he was gay and married to a man, you’d never guess it based on the things he shares. He talks about the hazards of trying to reason with a toddler, about how on Sunday’s, when he’s not working, he tries to give his spouse a break from the kids and take care of breakfast, and sometimes he mentions how big they’re getting and some of the things they do. The only different thing in the equation of the stories he shares is that he’s married to another guy.
